"Sir I have a question for you and you are free to disregard this because I know that it is your painting year.... So my story sir is that I am planning to take up med school next year but I also have this part of me that wants to pursue the arts. I am unsure if I can still pursue the arts while taking up medical school since it would need my time , focus and energy . With the prospect of me taking up medicine and me studying for the NMAT ,the artist side of me had taken the backburner and had been in decline .Sir how did you practice the art or integrate it into your life while working for the US embassy? Do you have any advise sir so that I could better practice my art or integrate it fully into my life while taking up med school ? How do I become a better artist ? Thank you for your time sir Tony and I hope you have a good day .

My reply:
Hello _____!
Go ahead and take up Medicine. It is the more lucrative career and it will stabilize your finances. Once you are practicing, however, you can take an excursion into the arts. Make a list of doctors who became more famous for their art rather than for their medical practice--the Russian playwright Anton Chekov was one of them.
Education and society make the big mistake of teaching us to specialize in only one field, but everyone is an infinite well from which he or she can draw boundless talent and creative energy. All you have to do is tap into it. So, go ahead and be what you want to be, as long as you be all of it with genuine passion, sincerity, maturity, and responsibility.
As to how you can become a better artist, only your personal experience and observation can show you that. The simplest solution for you in your present situation is to take up short-term courses under competent teachers. Many such workshops are offered in the summer season.
In the Philippines, we all have the freedom to be what we want to be. And one is already an artist by wanting very badly to be one.
