The breakfast hall is now being operated by Studio M; my friend the former caterer and the Filipino waiter on his staff are no longer there.
It is a slightly drizzly morning. One of the blackbirds lands on the rim of a concrete planter and pecks at my hash browns while I get my coffee. He, at least, is still here, and I am certain that he has many stories to tell about events that transpired between the last time I had breakfast here and this morning. I sit on the side balcony overlooking Book Cafe, the cafe I always see but never visit.
Three things finally become mine at this point in time: The Da Vinci Enigma Tarot deck, not to be confused with The Da Vinci Tarot deck which I already have at home, a deck of vintage mah jongg cards for my mah jongg oracle set, and a TinTin action figure I'd always wanted from a favorite issue, TinTin and The Blue Lotus.
Later, Shaz picks me up in a taxi and we go west to Haw Par Villa, where we trek through the hundreds of tableaux in preparation for the workshop I am conducting tomorrow. I take photos of statues that I feel are either inhabited or alive.
I learn that the villa was created by two brothers many years ago. "Haw" means "tiger" and "Par" means "leopard", referring to both brothers. I also learn that they are also the creators of Tiger Balm, a uniquely Singaporean product.
